Introduced in 1937, the Suntory Kakubin blended whisky is still one of the most popular whisky in Japan and continues to be presented in its original and distinctive turtle shell patterned square bottle (Kakubin meaning literally "square bottle" in Japanese).
This whisky retains a bright, deep gold colour, the nose opens with subtle grain and sourdough bread aromas, followed by orchard fruits and vanilla, honey and a hint of black pepper. The palate starts light, if not creamy, to a mildly fruity, dried grass, and gently spicy mid palate, with a deliciously juicy finish.
Although wonderful on its own, this whiskey aims to its best mixed with soda for a pitch-perfect refreshing Japanese highball.
