Traditionally crafted in the small city of Takayama, these dolls are hand-painted using woodblocks. The color is fixed to the raw cotton at high temperature and each doll is then filled in with rice hulls and hand-sewn, so that every one of them is genuinely unique. This set of two carp, one red and one blue, as well as being contained in a special gift box, not only celebrates one of the most beloved fish in Japan, a symbol of decision and courage, for its ability to fight its way up swift-running streams and cascades, but it is also dedicated to the famous national holiday of Kodomo no hi, as the carp reproduce the same silhouette as the carp-shaped windsocks (otherwise known as koinoboris) that are hoisted all over the country on May 5th to celebrate children in general and boys in particular.
