The wappa (わっぱ), also known as magewappa (曲げわっぱ), is a traditional container made from Japanese cedar (also called sugi), with a cylindrical shape. It is crafted using an ancient artisanal technique where thin sheets of wood are bent and secured to create a lightweight yet durable box. The wappa is used both as a bento box, as a container and for preparing the famous wappa meshi, a typical dish from the Niigata and Fukushima prefectures, consisting of white rice topped with seasonal ingredients.
The wappa is appreciated for its ability to keep food fresh, thanks to the wood's breathable properties. As it is made from natural materials, it should be hand-washed and kept away from moisture. It is not suitable for use in the microwave.
Its simple and elegant design has made it a beloved traditional item in Japan. However, it is becoming increasingly rare and sought after, as fewer artisans continue to produce it.
